Tønderhallen
Tønder, Denmark
Tønderhallen is not a football stadium in the traditional sense, but a multi-purpose hall that serves as a venue for TM Tønder. While the facility is officially known as the Tønder Sport- og Fritidscenter, the players and supporters know it by a different name: "Helvede i syd" (Hell in the South).
The building sits at Sønderlandevej 4-6, a location that blends sport with community function. It is not exclusive to one discipline. Alongside the handball matches, the space hosts the Tønder Badminton Club and the recently relocated Tønder Padel Association. Outside, the adjacent outdoor pitches tell another story of local investment. Five eleven-a-side natural grass pitches and two seven-a-side grounds sit next to a third-generation artificial surface, inaugurated in 2018. This mix of surfaces indicates a facility designed to serve multiple teams regardless of weather conditions.
There is also a history of larger gatherings beyond sport. The outdoor area, known locally as "Anlægget ved Tønderhallen," has hosted concerts for decades. Bands like Runrig and The Dubliners have played there. The venue holds a capacity of 1,500.
Instead, it provides a space where the "Hell in the South" nickname can exist because the crowd is close enough to the action to be heard. It is a place where the game is played, but also where the community gathers.
