Torpedo

The old ground never had a proper name for most of its life — built by the Likhachev car plant for its own works team, it ran as plain Torpedo Stadium for decades before Eduard Streltsov was given his name on the stand in 1997. What it lacked in title it made up for in fixtures: Manchester United and Real Madrid both came through for the 1992 UEFA Cup, and in 2006 the arena hosted matches at the Under-20 women's World Cup.

None of that saved the terraces from age. Heated turf, one of the first such pitches built in the Soviet Union, sat under a ground whose capacity had already shrunk once, from 16,000 to 13,450, when plastic seating replaced the old benches in 1998. The record crowd, 15,700, dates to an October 1996 defeat to Spartak that finished 3-4. It was not always a peaceful place: a 2012 Russian Cup tie against Dynamo was abandoned after crowd trouble.

That version of the ground is gone. Demolition ran through 2021 and 2022, and a new stadium is rising on the same site on Vostochnaya Street, designed by the French firm Michel Remon with INGRAD as main contractor. The rebuild trades grass for an artificial pitch, laid to FIFA Quality Pro standard with quartz sand and EPDM infill, and adds roughly 1,500 seats over the old capacity. Completion is set for late 2026.
