Twickenham Stadium

The surface is a mix of grass and fibres, laid down to take the heavy contact of the scrums.

The architecture is industrial rather than ornamental, a series of concrete bays and steel trusses that have been added to over time. The South Stand, completed in the mid-2000s, is the most recent addition. It sits behind the original brickwork. The old terraces are gone, replaced by seats, but the sense of distance between the crowd and the pitch remains. You can hear the conversation in the stands. The roof is open enough that the sound carries away.

The change in name is recent. The sponsorship deal with Allianz began in 2024, shifting the official title from Twickenham Stadium to Allianz Stadium Twickenham. The letters above the entrance are being updated to match. The change does not alter the feel of the place. The concrete steps are still the same. The way the light falls across the pitch in the late afternoon is unchanged. The hybrid surface is the same. The weight of the crowds is still the same. The stadium sits between the residential streets and the open land, a large grey shape in a green landscape. It does not hide. You can see it from the road.
