The name on the terraces was never the one on the paperwork. Through the 1990s supporters and locals began calling Vångavallen "Tjongavallen", a pun built on the Swedish verb tjonga — to hoof the ball away without much thought. The official name has not changed since the ground opened, and no sponsor has ever been attached to it; the nickname stuck anyway.

For most of its life this was not a football ground in the strict sense. A running track ringed the pitch until the work of 2000 and 2001, when a covered seated stand went up along the northern touchline and the track was taken out with it. That turned an athletics-and-football arena into somewhere built for one sport. After Trelleborgs FF won Superettan in 2003 and went back up to Allsvenskan, a standing terrace was added at the western end.

The record crowd followed almost immediately.

In 2015 the club settled a question that had been open for a while and kept the natural grass on the main pitch rather than laying an artificial surface, though artificial pitches are used for the training areas alongside. The municipality owns and runs the ground, which it shares with IFK Trelleborg. A rebuild is under way and due to run to 2027.
