Borisova Gradina has hosted this ground since 5 July 1953, when it opened on the site of the old Levski and Yunak club pitches. Kano Dundakov drew up the design.

Between 1998 and 2002 the terraces came out and seats went in, work UEFA's safety rules demanded, though the project stalled amid corruption allegations before it was finally finished.

Trouble with supporters has followed the venue into recent seasons: in 2019 UEFA ordered part of the ground closed, shutting off 5,000 seats. Sofia's national stadium is not done changing shape — in January 2026 the government committed €1.9 million toward further reconstruction, with capacity due to fall again, to 38,230.

Some of the loudest nights here had nothing to do with a ball. A concert by Lepa Brena in 1990 pulled in 120,000, dwarfing any football crowd the ground has recorded — Bulgaria's 2–0 win over Belgium in September 1987 brought 60,000, and England's 3–0 win in June 1979 drew 47,500.

The ground sits under the ownership of the National Sport Base EAD, overseen by Bulgaria's sports ministry, and remains home to the national team.
