VAT Arena
Davos, Switzerland
Formerly: Eisstadion Davos, Vaillant Arena, Zondacrypto Arena
The VAT Arena (formerly Eisstadion Davos, Vaillant Arena, and briefly Zondacrypto Arena) is an indoor ice hockey arena located in Davos Platz, Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. The address is Kurgartenstrasse 6, 7270 Davos Platz. It was designed by Krähenbühl Architekten and opened on October 1, 1979, constructed rapidly to meet the deadline for HC Davos's promotion to Nationalliga A; timber trusses were transported by the Rhaetian Railway at night. The primary tenant is HC Davos of the National League. The venue is the permanent home of the Spengler Cup, an annual international ice hockey tournament held between December 26 and 31, which moved indoors here in 1978/1979. HC Davos has won the Spengler Cup a record 17 times, including the 2025 final against U.S. Collegiate Selects (6–3). The tournament was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic. Since 2019, the arena has housed the House of Switzerland during the World Economic Forum. The venue also hosted the 1913 European Bandy Championships and international speed skating events on an adjacent outdoor rink until 1997. A major renovation by Marques Architekten took place from 2018 to 2021, costing approximately CHF 27 million. This project included new wood and glass facades, a circumferential concourse, extended north wing, renovated stands, and upgraded facilities. The capacity was adjusted during renovations; it was 7,080 prior to 2021 and approximately 6,547 post-renovation, though some sources cite 7,080 as the current figure. HC Davos set an average attendance record of 5,000 spectators per game in the 2023/24 season. A women's league record of 4,136 was set on March 15, 2025, for the playoff game between EV Zug and HC Davos Ladies. The arena has never hosted the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship. Former names include Eisstadion Davos (1979–2007), Vaillant Arena (2007–2019), Eisstadion Davos (2019–2025), Zondacrypto Arena (2025–2026), and VAT Arena (2026–present). Previous renovations occurred in 1981 (glass walls), 1998 (west tribune), and 2005–2006 (north tribune, video cube).
