Vicarage Road

The ground sits on land that was once a quarry and a rubbish tip, and from 1928 until 1978 greyhounds raced around the perimeter.

The Vicarage Road Stand replaced open terracing in 1993, the Rookery Stand followed in 1995 on the site of an older covered stand, and the east side waited longest — the Main Stand was shut in 2008 on safety grounds and not replaced until 2014, when the Sir Elton John Stand opened. Extra seats were bolted on almost immediately, and between 2015 and 2017 the north-east corner was filled in and the playing surface itself widened.

There has never been a sponsor's name on the ground, only on the stands inside it — one for Elton John, the club's honorary life president, who has played concerts here in 1974, 2005 and 2010, and returned on 3 and 4 July 2022 for two nights of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

The all-seated attendance record dates from 29 February 2020, when 21,634 came for Liverpool. England's under-21s played Azerbaijan here in a European qualifier in September 2011, and in March 2021 Chelsea and Arsenal met on the pitch in the women's League Cup final.
