Stadium
Vila Belmiro
Formerly: Estádio do Santos
The record crowd dates back to 20 September 1964, when 32,986 people packed in for a derby against Corinthians, a number the ground's current capacity of 20,360 makes hard to picture now. The 1997 rebuild did the heavier structural work: a new stand closed the last open end to complete the bowl, and the pitch got a computer-controlled drainage and irrigation system.
Vila Belmiro has hosted more than football. Peru beat Bolivia here in a 1949 South American Championship match, and the second leg of the 1962 Copa Libertadores final against Peñarol was abandoned in the 54th minute after crowd trouble, forcing a replay on neutral ground. In 2023, the centre circle became the site of a public wake for Pelé.
