Vostok Stadium

Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan

Formerly: Ust-Kamenogorsk Luzhniki

Vostok Stadium in Ust-Kamenogorsk does not look like many of the older grounds in Central Asia. Built by the workers of the Ust-Kamenogorsk Lead-Zinc Combine, it carries the weight of a “people’s construction” project rather than a modern corporate build. The name itself, chosen in 1961, reflects the era of the space race, though the club and the stadium were not named directly after Yuri Gagarin’s flight. Locals and the press informally called it Ust-Kamenogorsk Luzhniki during its construction in 1960–1961, a nod to its ambitious scale, but that was never an official title.

What stands out now is the surface. The original natural grass was replaced during a major reconstruction completed in 2026, confirmed by the Kazakhstan Football Federation, which installed a new FIFA-certified artificial turf of the latest generation. The seating has been modernised. The capacity sits at 8,500 today, down from a historical 12,000, but the atmosphere remains close to the pitch.

FC Vostok, founded in 1963 through the merger of Metallurg and Torpedo, has played here since the beginning. The club won the Kazakhstan Cup in 1994, a highlight in a history that also includes a 2008 match-fixing scandal that saw them excluded from the Kazakhstan Premier League alongside Shakhter Karagandy. Recent matches have seen attendances around 3,700. The stadium is also used for concerts and other events, though the football remains its primary anchor. The address, 15/1 Gagarin Boulevard in the Zaulbinsky District, places it firmly in the industrial heart of the city.
