The land at 5819 Sackville Street had already been a sports ground before anyone bolted a football stand onto it. The Halifax Wanderers Amateur Athletic Club began using the site in the 1880s, for rugby and for bowling, and it stayed that way — an open field inside a city park.

That changed in 2018, when HFX Wanderers FC needed somewhere to play in the Canadian Premier League. Sports and Entertainment Atlantic — under Derrick Martin — put up a modular, temporary structure on the existing turf, wrapped around a natural grass pitch, in the middle of a park in the middle of the city.

The money side is the unusual part. The build was financed by private investors, with no municipal funds involved.

Halifax has had sport on this patch since the 1880s. It has had a stadium here since 2018.
