The ground in New Plymouth carries a history that predates its current name. It began as a rugby ground in 1931, though the first permanent stadium structure was not completed until June 10, 1947. The modern configuration took shape after a major redevelopment, and the venue opened for use in August 1972. For decades it was known simply as Rugby Park, and after that, as Yarrow Stadium, a name given in August 2002 following a sponsorship deal with the local bakery Yarrows the Bakers. That arrangement ended on March 8, 2025, and the facility is now Stadium Taranaki.

The playing surface is a GrassMaster hybrid turf, a mix of natural grass and synthetic fibres installed as part of the 2002 project. The system allows for increased usage, up to 1,000 playing hours per year. The capacity has hovered around 25,000 since the 2002 rebuild, which added two new grandstands and modern facilities.

The official highest attendance record is 25,064 spectators, set on June 12, 2010, during an international rugby union match between New Zealand and Ireland. Other notable crowds gathered for New Zealand matches against Samoa and France, and for an NRL fixture involving the New Zealand Warriors in 2016. The venue hosted three pool matches during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, including a game between Ireland and the United States. It also staged the ITM Cup Premiership Final on October 25, 2014.

Primary tenants include the Taranaki Rugby Football Union and the Chiefs Super Rugby team, which has played here since 2013. The stadium has also hosted concerts and community events, including a Nitro Circus show in 2017. The official website is managed by the New Plymouth District Council.
