The ground in Qaladüzü is a setting that catches the wind as it sweeps down from the mountains to the north. The main stand is a simple, open structure of blue steel, its roof offering little shade on a clear day. Behind the seating, a red roof runs the length of the building, a splash of colour against the grey sky. A green fence separates the pitch from the parkland outside, where young trees have yet to grow tall.

There are no old stories here, only the recent ones. Constructed to replace the arena that was demolished, the stadium opened in late 2008, a decade of matches that stretched from the local league to the Premier League. The surface is artificial, a green carpet that holds its shape even when the rain comes in from the Caucasus. A running track circles the field, a reminder that the complex was built for more than just football, though the game has always been the main event.

It is a quiet place, apart from the noise of the game itself. When Simurq played Neftchi Baku in the autumn of 2014, the stands were full, the crowd pressing close to the pitch. A year earlier, Qarabağ had used the ground as a temporary home, their players moving across the turf in white kits. The atmosphere in Zaqatala is not one of noise, but of concentration. The players know the hills are watching. They know the wind will test them.

The floodlights stand ready for the evening match. Tall poles rise from the corners of the pitch, their arrays of lamps bright against the darkening sky. The seating is modest, three thousand five hundred places where the local supporters gather. There is a small section for guests, a VIP box set apart from the rest. The rest of the ground is open, the air moving freely through the steel beams.

Nothing is hidden here. The structure is plain, the colours bold. Blue and red meet against the green of the field. The stadium does not try to impress; it simply exists, a fixture in the town that has witnessed its share of victories and defeats. The players leave the pitch, the crowd disperses, and the hills remain silent.
