Zimní stadion Třinec
Třinec, Czechia
Formerly: Zimní stadion Třinec
The ice sheet at Werk Aréna sits in a town defined by its steelworks, and the name of the ground reflects that industrial lineage. "Werk" is simply the German word for works, a legacy of the Třinec Iron and Steel Works that constructed the original Zimní stadion Třinec in 1967.
The capacity of 5,200 places the venue firmly in the category of a passionate local stage rather than a national spectacle. It is not vast, but it is tight enough that the crowd feels the action. The atmosphere inside shifts depending on who is on the ice. For HC Oceláři Třinec, the home of the Czech Extraliga, the stands are usually full.
The building itself is utilitarian. It opened its doors to the public in 2014 after a construction period that lasted two years.
The arena is not exclusive to hockey. The large hall has hosted international events, including Group B matches of the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship. It has also seen Davis Cup tennis and concerts from artists like Joe Satriani and Tarja. However, the primary function remains the ice.
