Zimný štadión Žilina

The exterior of the Zimný štadión Vojtecha Závodského is a study in Soviet-era ergonomics, painted in a shade of yellow that suggests it has never seen a fresh coat of paint. Built between 1958 and 1961, it opened its doors on January 4, 1961. The structure is long and low, with a green corrugated roof that spans the length of the building.

Inside, the atmosphere is defined by the steepness of the concrete stands. The blue seats roll down the concrete tiers, creating a bowl that is deeper than it is wide. The capacity is 6,200, a figure that seems to stretch when the stands are full, particularly when MsHK Žilina are playing at home. The roof structure is visible from the seats, a skeleton of steel trusses that holds the lights, which cast a flat, white glare over the ice.

The building’s name honors Vojtech Závodský, a member of the Žilina Hockey Hall of Fame and a significant figure in the city's sports history. Before that, the venue was known as the Zimný štadión Žilina. It has carried several sponsorship names over the years: Garmin aréna, DOXXbet aréna, and Niké aréna.

The ice is artificial, a surface that allows for a faster game than traditional ice, a change made to suit the modern hockey style. The stadium is located at Športová 5, 010 01 Žilina, in the Žilinský kraj region, a part of Slovakia that is known for its mountains and its hockey tradition.

The stadium is not a temple of football, nor is it a temple of anything else. It is a building that has been used for hockey for over sixty years, a place where the fans have gathered to watch their team play, and a place that has seen the city change around it.
