Zimný štadión Zvolen

The Zimný štadión Zvolen is a functional bowl, designed for hockey, built to hold the noise when things came to a head.

The stands are steep and close. You do not have to crane your neck to see the play. Blue seats fill the sections, undulating down toward the boards. There is a sense of enclosure here. The glass protecting the ice reflects the lights, making the rink feel like a pool of cold water in the middle of a room. On the walls, banners hang from the rafters. Some carry numbers, others carry names. They sit quietly above the crowd.

HKm Zvolen plays here. The club has won the Slovak championship several times, and the fans know what it means to see the table go out of the window in these games. The ice is natural, maintained by an indirect cooling system that keeps the surface firm even when the heat takes the sting out of the outside air.

The building has changed its name with the times. It was once the Steiger aréna, and now it is the TiposBet Arena Zvolen. The sponsors come and go, but the geometry of the place stays the same.
