About the player
Juan Castillo grew up playing for local sides Zipaquirá San Pablo and Expreso Dorado before joining the Millonarios academy in Bogotá, where he never broke into the first team. His path to professional football ran instead through the United States: in April 2021 he signed for New York Red Bulls II in the USL Championship. He moved on to Philadelphia Union II in MLS Next Pro in January 2023 before returning to Colombia in January 2024 to sign for Fortaleza CEIF in the Categoría Primera A. He agreed a long-term contract with Nizhny Novgorod, announced on 17 January 2025.
Castillo, a left-footed defender born in Tumaco, has represented Colombia at youth level, with call-ups to the under-17 and under-20 national teams.
