India is the name that decides most Bangladesh matches before a ball is kicked, and for years the record backed that up. Nepal sits just behind that in importance, and it is Nepal, not India, that has actually lost to Bangladesh when the trophy was on the line, in the SAFF Women's Championship finals of 2022 and 2024.

The national side did not exist in any competitive sense until Golam Robbani Choton was brought in to coach a dormant squad in 2009; the first match followed a year later, a defeat to Nepal at the South Asian Games. Bronze at those Games in 2010 and again in 2016 marked the slow end of that period. The breakthrough came with the SAFF Championship itself: runners-up to India in 2016, then champions in 2022 and 2024, beating Nepal 3–1 and 2–1 in the two finals.

Sabina Khatun carried much of that rise personally. She captained the side for years, finished as its all-time top scorer and most-capped player, and was still active in the squad into the 2024–25 season with 61 caps and 38 goals behind her.

Peter James Butler took over as head coach in March 2024, following a short spell under Saiful Bari Titu and an interim stretch by Mahbubur Rahman Litu. The team plays in red, green and white, the colours of the flag, and is known at home as the Bengal Tigresses.

India remain the measure Bangladesh are judged against in the region, but it is Nepal who keep meeting them in finals — and keep losing.
