On 25 August 1975, Hong Kong Women took the field for the first time as a national side and lost 0–2 to New Zealand — the match doubled as the opening game of the AFC Women's Championship, which Hong Kong itself was hosting. The Hong Kong Ladies Football Association, set up a decade earlier in 1965 by Veronica Chan to give local women's football a route into international competition, had spent those ten years without a single capped fixture to show for it.

At the 1980 edition of the same championship, Hong Kong finished third, still their best result in the competition, and followed it with fourth-place finishes in 1981 and 1989.

Cheung Wai Ki stands as the side's most productive player on record, with nine goals in 24 caps, at a level where squads are built largely from part-time players drawn from local clubs such as Citizen AA and Happy Valley Athletic Association rather than full-time professionals.

Games against China carry the weight the fixture always does in Hong Kong football, men's or women's, coloured by the same political history that runs through the derby on the men's side. Continental honours beyond the 1980s have proved harder to add: the team has never won the Lunar New Year Cup or the East Asian Football Federation's championship, and Guangdong has taken every edition of the Women's Guangdong–Hong Kong Cup played since 2015. The clearer progress has come at the Asian Games, where quarter-final appearances in 2014 and 2018 mark the team's most recent high point, and where the next continental cycle is what the current squad is building towards.
