Gilberto, better known as Gibelé, played for Angola at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. His own club was not yet established in the country's top flight. The club had spent most of its life playing out provincial tournaments in Zaire Province, far from the Girabola, until the 2023–24 season finally brought promotion to the top division for the first time since it was founded, on 22 March 2001.

The debut season went as debuts often do, with a finish in the lower half of the table. The following campaign told a different story: sixth place in 2024–25, the best league finish in the club's history. Progress of that kind, arriving so soon after a first taste of top-flight football, tends to be built on a settled core, and defender António Hossi, who arrived with Petro de Luanda and a COSAFA Cup winner's medal already behind him, has been part of that spine alongside Gibelé.

Home games are played in front of just over 3,000 people at the Estádio Municipal Álvaro Buta, a modest setting for a club whose derby against city rivals Clube Desportivo do Zaire carries more weight locally than anything else on the calendar. No Girabola title or Taça de Angola sits in the club's history yet, and an earlier attempt at senior football under the name FC Mbanza Congo, which took part in the inaugural 1979 Girabola, ended in relegation without silverware either.

Sixth place has raised the bar the club now has to clear again, with survival no longer the only question and a first serious run at continental qualification within reach if the current group holds together.
