Turbine Potsdam Women

In the spring of 2010, Turbine Potsdam went to Getafe for the Women's Champions League final against Lyon. It was the club's second European title in six seasons, and it came in the same year they took the Frauen-Bundesliga — the second of what became six German championships between 2003 and 2014.

The club that won those trophies had only existed under that name since 1 April 1999, when the women's section broke away and registered as 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam. The football, though, goes back to 1971, and the trophy cabinet carries a second, older layer: six East German championships, the first in 1981, the last in 1989 — the season before the country that awarded them stopped existing.

Home is the Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion in Babelsberg, on the southern edge of Potsdam. Of its 10,787 places, 8,784 are terracing — a ground built for people who stand, and one Turbine share with the men of Babelsberg 03.

The blue-and-white side picked up a second nickname along the way, Torbienen — goal bees — which sits beside the plainer Turbine. Three German Cups have followed the league titles, the most recent in 2017.

What the honours boards in Potsdam do not show is the work underneath them. The under-19 girls' side has won 10 German championships, more than any other club in the country.
