Baba Yara Stadium

Baba Yara Stadium Built by the United African Company and opened in 1959, it carries the weight of local association football through several phases of construction. The original stands appeared in 1971, followed by a rebuild in 1977, but the ground truly found a new shape between 2006 and 2008. The west stand was demolished to make way for a two-tiered structure with corporate facilities, a change made to accommodate the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations. Before that renovation, the city renamed the ground in 2004 to honour Baba Yara, the Kumasi-born player who died young but left a long shadow over Asante Kotoko.

What defines the stadium today is not just its capacity, which sits at 40,528, but how it is used. The pitch is natural grass, a surface inspected by the Nigeria Football Federation in 2022 and described as level, even if recent reports suggest it needs improvement. Alongside the running track, the field is where the Ghana national team has played its most critical games. The atmosphere reached a peak during the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier Playoff against Nigeria, where unofficial numbers suggested 70,000 fans had gathered, far exceeding the official seating. That match ended a barren spell for the local side and saw ticket sales reach a record high. The stadium remains managed by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, and unlike many modern arenas, it does not have an official website.
