Botswana National Stadium

The Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone sits between the old and the new. It opened in 1966, built through public donations and self-help initiatives overseen by the Botswana National Sports Council. The original structure was modest, holding roughly 22,000 spectators, but the ground has changed shape around its edges.

Renovations began in earnest in 2008, intended for the 2010 FIFA World Cup training camps. By the time the stadium reopened in 2013, the two separate north and south stands had been joined into larger covered structures. A further renovation in 2016 added 3,000 seats, bringing the total capacity to 25,000 in anticipation of the country's 50th Independence celebrations.

The pitch is natural grass, surrounded by a running track that the stadium has shared with athletics since the start. It serves as the home ground for the Botswana national football team, the "Zebras", alongside local clubs such as Township Rollers and Notwane. The attendance record of 25,000 spectators has been reached on multiple occasions, including matches against South Africa and Malawi.

Its role extends beyond football. The stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2014 African Youth Games, along with track and field events. It regularly hosts COSAFA Cup matches and AFCON qualifiers. The ground also marks national occasions, such as the annual Independence Day celebrations. In August 2024, it welcomed over 30,000 fans to greet sprinter Letsile Tebogo after his Olympic gold medal victory. The location on Notwane Road places it firmly within the Broadhurst suburb of the South-East District.
