Golden City Park
Berekum, Ghana
Formerly: Berekum Sports Stadium
The ground is known locally as Golden City Park, a name that sits alongside the official Berekum Sports Stadium on the letterhead of the municipal assembly. It is a place defined by a constant search for a standard it has struggled to maintain. The pitch is natural grass, but the surface has rarely been straightforward. In March 2025, the Ghana Football Association rejected the stadium's licence, citing substandard conditions that forced the primary tenants, Berekum Chelsea F.C., to move their home matches away from the town.
The problem with the grass is not new. Reports from two years prior described the surface as browning and filled with sand, with patches of turf lifted from the ground. The venue has seen renovations, most notably in 2008 and 2010 when work was done in preparation for a potential run in the CAF Champions League. Berekum Chelsea qualified for the continental tournament in 2012, but the ground failed to meet the requirements, and they were forced to play in Accra instead.
The layout is simple and exposed. The capacity is listed at 5,000, a figure that has remained static in records. The ground lacks floodlights, a missing feature made more acute by the theft of existing lighting equipment in 2024. The stands are open to the elements, and the history of the town’s rivalry with Asante Kotoko suggests a tense atmosphere; a visit by a Kotoko official in 2019 ended with stones being thrown and a ban on the visiting club entering the stadium.
