Pakhtakor

Pakhtakor Central Stadium does not hide its age. It opened in 1956 as a bowl of concrete and wood. The first match brought Dinamo Tbilisi to Tashkent. The crowd gathered here, filling the stands to 65,000 for a league game that mattered more than the result.

The ground has changed shape since then. The wooden benches that once creaked under pressure were replaced by plastic seats in blue and yellow during a project that finished in 2008. That renovation brought a large video screen and turned the pitch to synthetic turf, a move meant to keep the surface back in full training regardless of the weather. The capacity shrank to meet modern standards, but the height of the floodlights remains. One of those towers stands tall in the old photographs, watching over the players as they leap for the ball.

Today, the stadium belongs to Pakhtakor FC, who have never left. While the national side moved to the Milliy Stadium, this building stays the home of the local giants. It hosts the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers and the CAFA Nations Cup, events that bring a different kind of noise to the streets around Prospekt Islama Karimova. The Navruz Festival celebrations stretch into the stands, turning the concrete into a stage for the city. The relationship between the club and the ground has never soured; it is a single thread of history.

The heat often takes the sting out of the play in the summer months, forcing teams to switch off at a set piece rather than chase the ball. The synthetic surface plays true, even when the wind sweeps down from the hills. It is an ordinary ground in many ways, built for the simple act of watching a game, but the presence of that old floodlight and the memory of the wooden benches keep it from being just another place to watch football.
