Stadion Barombong

Stadion Barombong stands on a patch of coastal land in the Barombong area of Makassar. It is a project that never quite reached completion. The structure sits on ground that, while flat and open.

The south stand is the most visible sign of the stadium's troubled past. The collapse was followed by years of uncertainty, with the site left largely unfinished after work stopped in the summer of 2019. Since then, the stands have remained hollow shells.

Despite the incomplete state of the building, the pitch itself is laid out in the standard configuration for a professional football ground. Natural grass covers the playing surface, maintained to a reasonable standard despite the lack of a permanent tenant. The field is surrounded by concrete terracing that rises on three sides, with the fourth side left open to the sky. There are no floodlights installed, and the changing rooms appear to be basic functional spaces rather than the luxury suites found in newer complexes.

The stadium was intended to serve as a home for PSM Makassar, the local club that has traditionally played in older venues around the city. Even without a regular squad calling it home, the facility occasionally hosts small-scale events and friendly matches. The lack of regular league football means there is no official attendance record, but on the rare occasions when crowds gather, the atmosphere is quiet compared to the packed arenas in Europe or South America. The distant sound of traffic from the nearby road is often more audible than any chants from the stands.
