Stadion Polonii Warszawa im. gen. Kazimierza Sosnkowskiego

Everyone in Warsaw calls it K6, after the address on Konwiktorska Street. The ground of Polonia Warsaw carries the name of General Kazimierz Sosnkowski, but the two digits are what gets said at the tram stop.

The ground came into use in the summer of 1928, and the sequence is worth keeping straight: football was played here on 15 August, six weeks before the formal opening on 30 September.

What happened to it afterwards is the part that shapes what stands there now. The Second World War left the site damaged, and the arena that Polonia returned to was substantially the work of the rebuilding carried out in the 1950s; the same name appears in reference works against the original 1928 design, which is one reason the ground's authorship is harder to state cleanly than its dates.

Unusually for a stadium of its age in a capital city, it has never traded under another name. No sponsor's title, no renaming, nothing in the record where a previous name would go. The pitch is grass, as it has been.

Polonia still play here, a few minutes' walk from the northern edge of the Old Town — a football ground that stayed put while the city around it was rebuilt from rubble.
