The City Ground

The City Ground does not shout for attention. It sits quietly in West Bridgford, a suburb of Nottingham, and has done so since 1898. The original design is attributed to Archibald Leitch, and the site was prepared by a local committee member, William Bardill.

The ground has lived through wars and floods. The pitch was damaged by bombing in May 1941, and the ground hosted events for servicemen. In March 1947, the River Trent flooded the pitch. The capacity has shifted with the times, reaching a peak of 48,000 between 1957 and 1965 before safety regulations forced a reduction. The playing surface is now a SISGrass stitched hybrid turf.

Notts County used the ground for home matches in the early 1900s when Trent Bridge was unavailable. Nottingham Forest has called it home ever since it opened, and in 2024, Nottingham Forest Women also began playing there. The official all-time attendance record stands at 49,946, set in 1967 for a match against Manchester United. The ground has seen everything from FA Cup semi-finals in the early years to three Group D matches during UEFA Euro 1996. More recently, it hosted a friendly between England and Senegal in June 2025.
