About

The 1. A DRL Women stands as the premier domestic handball competition for women in Slovenia. Organised by the Slovenian Handball Federation, the league carries the local title of the 1. ženska rokometna liga. It operates as a tier-one structure, feeding the nation’s representatives into European club competitions. The champion secures a place in the EHF Champions League, while the runner-up or the winner of the separate national cup enters the EHF European League.

Established in 1991, the league began its inaugural season in 1991/1992. Before this, Slovenian clubs participated in the Yugoslav First Women's Handball League. The competition has seen significant stability in its top tier, though the number of participating sides has varied between eight and twelve over the decades. Recent editions have featured eleven clubs, including RK Krim Mercator, RK Celje, RK Koper, and RK Olimpija Ljubljana. The format comprises a regular season played as a triple round-robin, consisting of 21 rounds. After this phase, the league divides into two groups: the top four contest the championship, while the others play for lower positions. Points earned during the regular campaign carry over into the playoff stage.

RK Krim holds the record for success in the league. The club has claimed the title 31 times since the competition’s founding. A notable achievement includes a run of 21 consecutive championships spanning from 1995 to 2015. This dominance was interrupted in 2016 when RK Zagorje secured victory. Prior to Krim’s rise, RK Olimpija Ljubljana won the first three seasons from 1992 to 1994. RK Celje remains a consistent contender, frequently finishing as the runner-up. Currently, RK Krim Mercator holds the title of champion from the 2024–2025 season. The league is sponsored as Liga NLB Leasing.

The competition is distinct from the Ženski pokal Slovenije, which is a knockout tournament. While promotion and relegation rules are not fully detailed in available records, the structure allows for movement between the first and second tiers. The league continues to serve as the primary stage for Slovenian women’s handball, maintaining its status as the highest level of the sport in the country.
