Handball at the African Games is a medal sport within the continental multi-sport event, which was founded in 1965 in Brazzaville, Congo. The Games were originally organized by the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA), established in 1966, and are now managed by the African Union (AU), ANOCA, and AASC. Men's handball has been contested since the inaugural 1965 edition, while women's handball was introduced in 1978 in Algiers. The tournament format typically involves national teams divided into groups (e.g., two groups of four in the 2023 Accra edition) followed by knockout stages including semi-finals, bronze medal matches, and classification matches for lower rankings. Egypt is the most successful nation in men's handball with 8 gold medals, while Angola dominates women's handball with 8 gold medals. The current champions (as of 2023) are Egypt (men) and Angola (women). The African Games handball tournament is distinct from the African Handball Championship (organized by CAHB); the latter is a biennial, sport-specific competition that primarily qualifies teams for the IHF World Championship, whereas the African Games is a quadrennial multi-sport event that has occasionally served as a qualifier for the Summer Olympics (e.g., 2019 Games for Tokyo 2020) but not for the World Championship.
