About

The Women's Handball tournament at the African Games is a quadrennial event held within the multi-sport African Games. The Games were founded in 1965 in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo, following a 1962 initiative by African Ministers of Youth and Sport in Paris to rename the earlier "Friendship Games" to "Pan-African Games." The event is organized by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) under the auspices of the African Union. The Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) was established in 1966 to manage the games. Handball was contested in the inaugural 1965 edition for men, while the women's tournament was introduced later in 1978 in Algiers, Algeria.

The tournament serves as a prestigious continental competition but is distinct from the African Women's Handball Championship (AWHC), which is the official senior national team championship organized by the Confederation of African Handball (CAHB). The AWHC is the primary qualifier for the IHF World Championship and the Summer Olympics, whereas the African Games is a multi-sport festival where handball is one of many disciplines. There is no promotion or relegation system, as it is not a league. Qualification typically involves the host nation automatically qualifying, with remaining spots filled through regional zone qualifiers or performance in continental championships.

Angola is the dominant force in the tournament, having won eight gold medals (1991, 1995, 1999, 2007, 2011, 2015, 2019, 2023), including a streak of seven consecutive titles from 1991 to 2023. Other winners include Algeria (1978), Ivory Coast (1987), and Cameroon (2003). The 2011 final between Angola and Congo (41–23) is noted as the highest-scoring final in the tournament's history. The 2023 edition was won by Angola, who defeated the host nation Ghana in the final. The tournament does not have specific named sponsors for the handball discipline itself, as sponsorship is generally tied to the Games as a whole.
