Andebol 1 (Portugal) 2026/27

Andebol 1 stands as the premier professional men's handball league in Portugal. Officially known as the Campeonato Nacional de Andebol Masculino and currently sponsored as the Campeonato Betclic Andebol 1, the competition was founded in 1951 by the Portuguese Handball Federation. It sits at the top of the national pyramid, overseeing the highest level of domestic play.

The season structure is defined by a two-phase approach designed to determine both European qualification and relegation. After a regular season of 22 rounds, teams are divided into three groups based on their standings. Points from the regular phase are carried over at fifty percent value. Group A determines the champion and secures a place in the EHF Champions League. Group B decides the recipient of the EHF European League spot, while Group C determines which teams must fight to avoid dropping to the Segunda Divisão. The bottom two teams in the final phase are relegated, with the top two sides from the second tier earning promotion.

Historically, the league has been dominated by a trio of clubs: Sporting CP, FC Porto, and SL Benfica. Sporting CP and FC Porto are tied for the most titles with twenty-four each. Sporting CP enters the current campaign as the reigning champion, having achieved a three-peat streak. Notable historical achievements include FC Porto's seven consecutive titles between 2008 and 2015 and Sporting's five consecutive titles from 1969 to 1973. The league has undergone several name changes due to sponsorship, evolving from the Campeonato Nacional da Primeira Divisão to the Liga Portuguesa de Andebol, before settling on its current format. European qualification is determined by EHF coefficients, with Portugal typically ranking between eighth and tenth globally.

The competition is distinct from the Taça de Portugal, a knockout tournament featuring a Final Four stage, and the Portuguese Handball Super Cup, which is played between the league and cup winners.
