About

The Super Handball League Women serves as the premier women's handball competition in the Netherlands. Organized by the Koninklijke Nederlandse Handbal Bond (KNHB), the tournament has evolved significantly since its inception as the Hoofdklasse in 1954. After operating under the Eredivisie name for decades, the league adopted its current branding in 2024. It occupies the highest position within the Dutch handball hierarchy, sitting above the Eerste Divisie.

The structure of the season has undergone changes to balance competitive fairness. Recent editions featured twelve clubs divided into a regular season and a subsequent split phase. The leading eight sides contested Championship Pools, while the remaining four entered a Relegation Pool. Victory in the Championship Pools secured a place in a Best-of-Three final series to determine the national champion. Simultaneously, the team finishing last in the Relegation Pool faced a playoff against a side from the second tier to avoid automatic decline.

Historical dominance in the modern era belongs to VOC Amsterdam, who claimed eight titles between 2000 and 2023. SV Dalfsen also held a significant period of control, winning six consecutive championships from 2011 to 2016. The 2024/25 season concluded with JuRo Unirek/VZV defeating Westfriesland/SEW in the decisive final series. The competition has occasionally faced disruptions, most notably the cancellation of the 2019/20 and 2020/21 campaigns due to the pandemic, during which no winners were declared. While the league shares the Eredivisie moniker with the men's football and women's football competitions, it remains distinct in governance and sport.
