About

Olísdeild kvenna serves as the premier women's handball competition in Iceland, operating at Level 1 of the national pyramid. Established in 1939, the league is overseen by the Handball Association of Iceland (HSÍ) and currently features eight clubs competing for the national title.

The season unfolds in two distinct phases. During the regular season, teams engage in a double round-robin format, ensuring every side plays each opponent twice. The top four teams from this stage advance to the playoffs, known locally as úrslitakeppni. This knockout phase consists of semi-finals and a final, with all matches played as best-of-five series where the first side to secure three wins claims victory.

Relegation is determined through a playoff, or umspil, pitting the bottom teams of the Olísdeild against the leading sides from the second-tier Grill 66 deild kvenna. This structure maintains competitive integrity by giving lower-ranked teams a chance to avoid dropping levels.

Historically, Fram holds the record for success in the competition, having claimed 23 titles. Valur follows closely with 20 championships. Valur entered the 2026 season as the reigning champions after winning the previous campaign. The league operates independently from the men's equivalent, Olísdeild karla, which features twelve teams. Despite its smaller size compared to other Nordic leagues, the competition is noted for its high density of domestic talent.
