The German Handball Super Cup serves as the official season opener for professional handball in Germany. Organized by the Deutscher Handballbund (DHB), this annual fixture pits the reigning Handball-Bundesliga champion against the winner of the DHB-Pokal. Known officially as the Rexel Super Cup from 2026, the event follows a single-match format held typically in August. Should one club secure both major domestic honours, the Bundesliga runner-up steps in as the opponent. The contest concludes quickly; if regulation time ends level, overtime and a penalty shootout determine the victor. THW Kiel stands as the most successful participant in the tournament's history, claiming thirteen titles. Their dominance includes a run of four consecutive victories between 2020 and 2023. Other frequent winners include TBV Lemgo and HSV Hamburg, each with four crowns, while Rhein-Neckar Löwen, SG Flensburg-Handewitt, and SC Magdeburg have also added to the trophy cabinet. The 2026 edition saw SC Magdeburg defeat Füchse Berlin 38–31 to lift the silverware. Füchse Berlin had previously won the competition in both 2024 and 2025, establishing themselves as recent contenders. Attendance figures highlight the event's growing popularity. A record crowd of 10,298 spectators gathered at the SAP Garden in Munich in 2025 to watch the clash between Füchse Berlin and THW Kiel. Historically, the highest-scoring final occurred in 2006 when HSV Hamburg faced THW Kiel, resulting in 74 total goals. The largest margin of victory came in 2007, with THW Kiel winning by ten goals against SG Kronau-Östringen. While distinct from the longer DHB-Pokal knockout tournament, the Super Cup provides immediate visibility for the upcoming campaign.
