Supercup (Austria) 2026/27

The Austrian Handball Supercup serves as the opening fixture for the domestic campaign, bringing together the top contenders in a single decisive encounter. Organized by the Austrian Handball Federation, the event functions as a curtain-raiser before the main league action begins. This annual one-off match pits the champion of the Handball Liga Austria against the victor of the ÖHB-Cup national knockout tournament. Should the league title holders also secure the cup prize, the runners-up from that competition step in to fill the opposing spot.

The tournament has operated under various sponsorship titles over the years, including the spusu Supercup and the IMMOunited HLA Supercup. It stands apart from the regular season league and the knockout cup, offering a distinct prize for the participants. Alpla HC Hard holds the record for success in the competition, having claimed the trophy six times since its inception. Their victories span several years, demonstrating sustained dominance in this specific fixture.

The format requires immediate resolution, with no return legs or replays involved. The outcome determines bragging rights and provides momentum for the teams entering the full season. While the league championship crowns the best side over a long campaign, and the cup tests resilience through elimination rounds, this supercup focuses on a single moment of high stakes. The participants represent the pinnacle of Austrian handball performance from the preceding months. Recent editions have seen strong attendance and competitive finishes, highlighting the importance placed on this pre-season clash.
