Match report

Naft saw off Al-Minaa Basra 3-0 in the Iraqi League's regular season fifth round on Friday evening. The visitors took all three points in Basra with a performance that spoke more of control than chaos. By then, the result had already shifted the table's balance.

M. Adnan opened the scoring in the eleventh minute, a simple finish that caught the home side flat-footed. Al-Minaa had started with their usual confidence, but the reply came faster than anyone expected. To be fair, the visitors had been patient all pre-season.

Adnan doubled his tally in the thirty-first, this time capitalising on a defensive scatter. The home defence looked disjointed, players out of position and communication broken. Things came to a head when Kouvouama added a third just before half-time, the ball finding net at forty-five plus three.

The statistics told a different story to the scoreline. Al-Minaa held 56 per cent possession and registered 124 attacks, yet could only muster four shots on target. Naft managed three shots on target from 88 attacks and converted efficiently. The old documentary formula applies: possession means little without penetration.

Our prediction had given Al-Minaa the edge at forty per cent confidence, but the match went another way entirely. Naft's defensive solidity, built through three consecutive draws, had finally produced an away victory. The hosts' four-game unbeaten run ended, and their fourth-place hopes took a hit.

In the table, Naft moved to fourth with nine points from five games, while Al-Minaa remained tenth with seven. The gap between them widened, and the visitors fancy their chances of pushing for the top four. Al-Minaa will need to address their finishing before the next fixture.
