Dragūnas Klaipėda kept their perfect start intact with a 30:26 victory over Koks in the Baltic League on Saturday. The hosts, sitting second in the table with two points from one game, took the win in front of their home crowd. Koks, also level on points but third on the table, made the trip north and came away empty-handed.
Thirty goals to twenty-six does not read like a thriller on paper, but the margin tells a different story. Dragūnas built a cushion early and never looked back. By then the visitors had already begun chasing the game, and chasing in handball is a thankless pursuit when the clock keeps running.
We had this nailed down before kickoff, if I am being honest. Our prediction sent home as a win for the hosts at 67 per cent confidence, and the result followed the logic. Dragūnas have the deeper squad, and that showed when Koks ran out of steam in the second half.
Both sides enter this round with one win under their belts. Dragūnas beat Mistra 32:27 on Friday, while Koks edged past HK Svėasa 31:28 on the same evening. The quality gap between those opponents was not identical, and that may have prepared the hosts for what came next.
Form matters in this league. Dragūnas have won four of their last five outings, with only a 40:32 defeat to HK Svėasa in May breaking their run. Koks, meanwhile, lost three of their last five matches, including two to Mistra in March. That inconsistency caught up with them on Saturday.
The result keeps Dragūnas in second place and pushes Koks further down. Both teams sit on two points after one game, but the goal difference will start to tell a story as the table fills out. Dragūnas hold the advantage, and they showed it when it mattered.
