Match report

Petrojet claimed a 2:1 win over El-Guna in the Premier League's fifth round on Wednesday, a result that extends the visitors' unbeaten run while leaving the hosts rooted to the bottom. Mostafa El-Badry opened the scoring in the twenty-fifth minute before Mohamed Ali Osman doubled the lead just eight minutes later. El-Guna pulled one back through Saber Ashraf El Shimi on the stroke of full-time, but the late consolation did nothing to alter the outcome. The visitors had already done enough to secure three points before the final whistle.

El-Guna dominated possession at 65 per cent and created more clear-cut opportunities, registering 1.54 expected goals to Petrojet's 0.94. Yet the hosts squandered their chances, firing four shots on target and five wide without finding the net until the dying moments. Petrojet, by then, had tightened things up defensively and made the most of their two big chances. It was a match where the statistics told one story and the scoreboard another.

The turning point came early, when El-Guna's control of the midfield failed to translate into penetration. Petrojet absorbed pressure and struck on the counter, with El-Badry's opener catching the hosts off guard. By the thirty-third minute, Osman had added a second, and the momentum had shifted irrevocably. El-Guna made three substitutions at half-time in a bid to change shape, but the damage was already done.

Petrojet managed the game with composure, bringing on Adham Hamed and Badr Yousef Mohammed Moussa in the sixty-first minute to shore up the midfield. Islam Abou Slemma entered in the sixty-ninth, adding fresh legs as El-Guna pushed forward desperately. Barakat Haggag collected a yellow card in the eighty-sixth minute after a mistimed challenge, a moment that could have shifted the balance had it been a second booking.

El-Guna remain bottom of the table with two points from five matches, having not won since the start of the season. Petrojet sit eighth with seven points, their form improving steadily under the current setup. The hosts have lost three of their last five league fixtures, while the visitors have won two and drawn one. We had backed El-Guna to prevail with 37 per cent confidence, but the match went the other way — and it was the early goals that broke the game open.

The result leaves El-Guna searching for answers before the next fixture, while Petrojet hold their position in the upper half. One goal difference separates them from safety at this stage of the campaign. The final whistle brought a measure of relief for the away side, who had weathered sustained pressure in the closing stages.
