About the player
Diego Gonzalez worked his way through the Houston Dynamo academy, joining after starting out at La Academia Revolución before signing his first professional contract with Houston Dynamo 2 in 2022.
He was part of the Houston Dynamo squad that won the U.S. Open Cup in 2023, though he did not make his first-team debut that year. His breakthrough came in 2024, when he played almost 2,500 minutes for Houston Dynamo 2, scored six goals and set up ten more, a return that put him in the MLS NEXT Pro Best XI.
That form earned him a call-up to the Houston Dynamo first team in March 2025, and he marked the occasion with a volley against El Salvador. In May 2025 he suffered a tibial fracture that required surgery and kept him out of action for close to a year.
Gonzalez returned to fitness in 2026 and was loaned to Portland Hearts of Pine that June for the rest of the USL League One season, scoring seven goals in fourteen appearances and adding an assist. He has yet to be capped by the United States at senior level.
