About the player

Sam Sanna's route to Ligue 1 ran through Toulouse's academy, which he joined in 2014 after coming up through Boutons d'Or Ger and a spell at the Pôle Espoirs de Castelmaurou. He signed his first professional contract there in June 2020 and made his debut that August. Two years later he was part of the Toulouse squad that won the Ligue 2 title and went up to the top flight, though his own contribution stayed modest: 14 league appearances and no goals in that promotion campaign.

It was on loan at Laval that Sanna's career took shape. He was named Man of the Match by Ouest-France on his first start, against Guingamp in August 2022, and scored his first professional goal that October, in a 4–0 win over SM Caen. The loan was made permanent for a free transfer in July 2023, and Laval extended his contract until 2029 the following March, a clear sign of how central he had become to the club. Under coach Olivier Frapolli, Sanna has since taken on the captaincy and made 37 league appearances in the 2023–24 season.

Often filed as a defender in some records, Sanna operates primarily in midfield — either as a central or defensive midfielder — while remaining comfortable enough at right-back to cover there when needed. That versatility, allied to his growing leadership role at Laval, has made him a notable figure in French football.
