CD Lunda-Sul

In May 2025 the pitch at Estádio das Mangueiras was judged unfit for competition, and the Angolan Football Federation shut the ground down. CD Lunda-Sul spent the rest of that Girabola season playing its home matches in Dundo, in neighbouring Lunda Norte province, well clear of its own supporters in Saurimo.

The club those supporters follow did not grow out of some long municipal tradition. It was formed in November 2020, after Saurimo FC, previously known as Bikuku FC, was relegated and folded in 2019, leaving the provincial capital without a side in the higher divisions. There had been an earlier club called Inter da Lunda-Sul in the Girabola of the 1980s, though nothing ties it directly to the current outfit.

What followed was quick by any measure. Lunda-Sul won the Gira Angola Série C, the regional third tier, in 2021 and went straight up to the Girabola for the 2021–22 season. By 2023–24 the club had finished third, enough to qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup the following season. None of that has yet produced a Girabola title or a Taça de Angola, but for a club not yet five years old at the time, the trajectory said more than a trophy would have.

On the pitch, Pedro Agostinho built his reputation as a defensive midfielder good enough to earn Angola caps before Petro de Luanda signed him away in 2024. Saurimo's derby, against FC Bravos do Maquis and Sagrada Esperança, is fought under the label "Derby do Leste" — the Eastern Derby, a rivalry defined more by geography than by history.

Saurimo itself holds around 7,000 at Estádio das Mangueiras when the ground is playable, blue and white in the stands, a long way east of Luanda and, for a season, a long way even from its own pitch.
