Göppingen's handball side traces back to the gymnastics movement that produced Turnclub Göppingen in 1896; the handball department itself came later, formed in October 1920, and the club spent decades under the name SpVgg Göppingen after a 1971 merger with the town's police sports club before reverting to Frisch Auf Göppingen in 2024.

What the name changes obscure is that this is one of the sport's old powers. Between 1954 and 1972, Frisch Auf won the German championship nine times, a run built around Bernhard Kempa, who played for the club and then coached it, collecting all nine titles and both of its European Cup of Champions wins, in 1960 against GF Aarhus and in 1962 against Partizan Bjelovar, along the way.

The championships stopped coming after 1972, and the club never won the domestic cup, but European form returned decades later: four EHF Cup titles arrived in 2011, 2012, 2016 and 2017, the last two settled at Final Four tournaments where Göppingen beat Chambéry and Nantes, then Magdeburg and Füchse Berlin. A defeat to TBV Lemgo in the 2006 final had preceded that run.

Matches are played at the EWS Arena, formerly the Hohenstaufenhalle, which holds 5,599 for handball. The fixture against TVB Stuttgart is contested as the Schwaben-Derby. Ben Matschke took over as head coach for the 2024/25 season.
