HJK U19

Last season took HJK Helsinki's under-19 side further than most Finnish youth teams manage: through the Domestic Champions Path of the UEFA Youth League they beat Be1 NFA, FC Ballkani, Trabzonspor and KRC Genk in turn, reaching the round of 32 before Paris Saint-Germain's academy ended the run 6-1 on aggregate. A year earlier the run had stopped one round short of that, Nantes closing it out after Cork City had already been seen off.

The team draws on the same production line that has fed HJK's first team for decades. Mikael Forssell went through the youth ranks before making his senior debut in 1997, and Përparim Hetemaj followed the same path a generation later. The A-nuorten SM-sarja, Finland's national under-19 championship, has been won by the club fifteen times, most recently in 2024, a return few academies in the country can match.

That depth of production sits beneath a senior side that has been champion of Finland 33 times and winner of the Finnish Cup 15 times, so a place in HJK's youth setup carries an expectation attached to it that has little equivalent elsewhere in Finland. Those who don't break into the first team straight away often continue at HJK Klubi 04, the club's reserve side in the Ykkösliiga, rather than leaving altogether. The rivalry the age group grows up with is the Stadin derby against HIFK, sharpened by meetings with KuPS and TPS.

The senior club that all of this feeds was founded in Helsinki in 1907, under the name Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi — the initials that still mark the first team, and the boys coming up behind it.
