Breda sits in North Brabant, close enough to Tilburg that the two cities have spent a century arguing over the same stretch of ground, and it is that argument, more than anything else, that shapes NAC Breda. The club came together on 19 September 1912, when NOAD and ADVENDO merged, and the meeting settled on NAC, a compromise put forward by Frans Conert that folded both names, and the word Combination, into one.

The Yellow Army plays at the Rat Verlegh Stadion, 20,500 seats, in a yellow shirt at home and black away, and the fixture that matters most is the short trip to Willem II — the Brabantsederby, twenty kilometres apart, both clubs from the same province. Feyenoord carries its own weight in the club's history too, the 1979 "Ashtray Incident" still remembered, while PSV, despite sharing the province, never built the same rivalry.

NAC's silverware belongs mostly to a different football era. The 1921 title came under a championship structure that bore little resemblance to today's Eredivisie, and between 1920 and 1955 the club topped the old Southern Division year after year — a stretch that ended when Dutch football restructured in 1956. The one cup NAC actually won came later: 1973, beating NEC Nijmegen 2-0 in the final, after losing finals to Ajax in 1961 and again in 1985.

Frans Conert gave the club its name at a meeting where two founding sides refused to back down.
