Wohlen sits in the Freiamt district of canton Aargau, and for handball there it has meant one club since 1966, when the section split off from the gymnastics club TV Wohlen. The women's team wears red and black and plays at the Sporthalle Hofmatten, a hall locals call the "Ballermatte," rebuilt with a new triple gymnasium in 2022 and holding 1,050 for handball nights.
The team spent years as a fixture of the Nationalliga B, the country's second tier, and was counted among the region's strongest sides in that period, with Dominique Meier and Francisca Meier among the players who carried that era. The strength did not hold. In 2016 a shared squad arrangement with GC Amicitia Zürich fell apart for lack of players, and Wohlen's women had to start again in the third division.
Rebuilding since has meant sharing players rather than standing alone. Under the name SG Freiamt, a pooled squad with HC Mutschellen and TV Muri, Wohlen won its promotion round in 2024 against RG Vaud to move up to the 1. Liga. TV Muri remains the old rival regardless — matches between the two are still called the Freiämter-Derby. One name from the club's more recent past travelled further: goalkeeper Seraina Kuratli played for Wohlen between 2017 and 2020 before leaving for GC Amicitia Zürich, where she won the Swiss championship in 2026.
No national title or Swiss Cup sits in Wohlen's own history. What the club has instead is a hall built for 1,050 people in a town that keeps sending its handball players out through a shared shirt.
