AZSG

Athletik Zentrum St. Gallen is a multi-purpose hall in St. Gallen, Switzerland, where the primary focus remains on athletics and indoor sports. The venue hosted the Swiss Indoor Athletics Championships in its inaugural year and later accommodated the Unihockey World Championship in 2011. A covered 200-meter running track with height-adjustable curves runs through the interior, setting it apart from open-air grounds. For football, the facility utilises a synthetic sports floor or a temporary pitch, avoiding the debate over natural turf that plagues many outdoor stadiums. This flexibility allows the space to host events like the Swiss Inclusion League in 2025 without permanent modification. Capacity is capped at 3,000 spectators, with 1,500 fixed seats and standing areas that can expand for larger gatherings. The building is owned and operated by the City of St. Gallen, a fact that ensures its maintenance but also limits its commercial footprint. Construction began in 2004 and cost 41 million CHF, a sum that reflects the precision engineering required for the adjustable track. While former names like AZ are sometimes used, the full title persists in official records. Unlike the grand arenas built for World Cups, this hall does not demand attention for its size. It sits quietly in the city, accessible via Parkstrasse 2, offering a neutral ground for competitions that require shelter from the weather. The absence of a regular football tenant means the atmosphere remains defined by the sport being played that day, not by decades of local rivalry. It is a place where the pitch changes shape depending on the event, a rarity in modern sports infrastructure.
