Dvorana Hardek

The Hardek sports hall in Ormož is a community hub that has slowly outgrown its original frame. Built in 1994 for the local primary school, it gained a permanent sporting identity when RK Jeruzalem Ormož began using it. The club has called this wooden-floored venue home for decades, competing in the Slovenian First League of Handball while the school uses it for wider youth tournaments.

What defines the space today is not its age, but its expansion. In 2017, a contract was signed to add 1,100 square meters to the existing structure, a major intervention that closed the doors for a year and a half. When it finally reopened in November 2019, the mayor and the school principal were there to mark the occasion. The floor remains the critical detail here: it is parquet, hard and unforgiving, with reports of uneven sections that players must navigate. It is a surface that remembers every slide and jump.

The capacity remains a point of quiet disagreement among those who track such things. Some figures suggest 700 seats, others whisper of 1,000, but the municipal website offers no number at all. The crowd does not matter as much as the proximity; the stands are close enough to hear the squeak of shoes and the thud of a ball against the wall. It is an indoor arena where the acoustics amplify the noise, creating an environment that feels smaller than it is. There is no grand facade or distant viewing platform, just a functional space adapted from a school gymnasium into a professional training ground. The name Hardek comes from the settlement itself, a reminder that this place belongs to the quarter as much as to the club.
