G. Kassimatis Indoor Hall
Marousi, Greece
Inside the sprawling Olympic Athletic Center of Athens, the G. Kassimatis Indoor Hall sits quietly. Built in 1982, it predates the complex’s later grandeur. The arena is not a temple of sport; it is a working gymnasium.
Its capacity is a tight 1,000, a figure confirmed by the SEHA-Gazprom League and the Handball Hall of Fame. When safety concerns regarding the nearby roofs forced a temporary shutdown in September 2023, the hall was declared structurally safe only after months of waiting. For the regulars—AEK H.C. and the women’s volleyball team—it remains a sanctuary of routine, far removed from the televised spectacle of the larger Telekom Center.
Renovation works began in November 2016, aiming to modernize a facility that had seen little change since its opening. The hall is named after Georgios Kassimatis, a constitutional law professor, a detail that feels appropriate for a venue that values order over excitement. Things came to a head during the roof scare, but the structure held, and the games continued.
