Giant Axe

The Giant Axe sits on West Road in Lancaster, Lancashire. It serves as the home for Lancaster City F.C., a club known as the Dolly Blues. While the ground holds 3,500 spectators, the main stand seats 513 people.

The venue has hosted football since 1905. The club, originally formed as Lancaster Town F.C. in 1911, has played there ever since. The name derives from the shape of the exterior wall of the original sports complex, which resembles an axe head when viewed from above. The stadium has kept that name throughout its history.

A fire in the 1970s destroyed the original main stand and social club. The John Bagguley Stand, named after the club’s late president, was created in 1977. Later additions include the West Road End Terrace in 2000 and a social club known as the Dolly Blue Tavern in 1994. The tavern eventually closed in 2012 and was converted into sheltered accommodation.

The record attendance remains at 7,506 spectators, set during an FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round match against Carlisle United in 1927. Ownership rests with Lancaster City Council, though the original structure was developed as part of a private multi-sport facility that also featured tennis, cricket, and bowls. The playing surface is natural grass for the semi-professional side.
