Hala im. Dolnośląskich Olimpijczyków
Legnica, Poland
Formerly: Hala OSiR, Miejska Hala Sportowa
The Arena of the Lower Silesian Olympians is not the sort of place that commands a city skyline. The original name, the Municipal Sports Arena, stuck better than the current one; locals still call it Hala OSiR.
When MSPR Siódemka Miedź Legnica played in the PGNiG Superliga, the top tier of Polish handball, they closed the game out here. The hall was too small for the big crowds that follow those teams, but it held its own. You could see the players close up, and the noise from the supporters bouncing off the walls. It was a tight squeeze, but the game was won inside twenty minutes for the home side on occasion. The capacity is listed as one thousand, and the line has barely moved since the building opened in 1985.
You do not get the drama of a cup football match here, but the players know the floorboards. They pick up two bookings in five minutes and the referee has to shout to be heard over the squeak of shoes. The building has not changed much since the nineties, and that stability suits a team that is closing in on a deal for promotion. It is a functional space, nothing more, and that is exactly what is required when you are fighting for survival in the league.
